I have a Canon Ixus 860 IS. And I didn't get sand in it (as far as I know). and you should try solutions suggested in the other answers here, it may also happen that your camera has a manufacturing defect. I suspect I got some sand in the lens because the lens wouldn't close and just say 'lens error' and 'retry power on'.

Before pushing the flap all the way down on the pivot post you will want to catch one end of the spring arm on the post that drives the flaps to HOWEVER, there is also some obvious potential for damaging or dislodging internal components with this method, such as unseating ribbon cables, or cracking LCD screens.
