You may have caused your lens error and you may not have. Unfortunately that only lasted about 2 weeks. I was bit put off as there was no obvious damage or any irregularity in the lens but I pushed it down until I heard a click. With some models, the factory reset resolves the lens error. Source
The idea is that the camera will try to autofocus while the lens is extending, hopefully seating the lens barrel guide pins back into their slots. Brilliant site! On older models of Canon cameras, the lens error is usually reported as E18 error. I gently slipped a paper edge between the shutter pieces and bingo, their was a small click and the shutter opened fully!
fixed it by rapping the camera on the table using the padded USB port. Finally whacked it harder on the AV input corner, and it worked. When this happens, turn the camera off, turn it on again and see if the problem has been solved. Turned on and the lens deployed. Due to the common nature of this problem, it seems that Canon has dropped the numerical marking of this error in newer cameras, and is now using the term "lens error". I also tried turning the camera on and holding down the shutter button but that did nothing. Then i switched on and and the camera worked normally. Other variations include hitting a side of the camera against the palm of your hand.
