I could not get this problem to go away so I figured I would just reformat (maybe I had a virus?). The D: drive will remain intact. I have a recovery disc but it wont boot in safe mode or otherwise.

Booting with the recovery disk gets the same outcome, so it will not get me to the command prompt either. Just make sure you do not FORMAT the whole drive when installing the temporary retail version.
