The culprit was the loose lens motor ribbon cable. I turned the camera on the lens retracted an then I held it in the retracted position while the camera tried to extend the lens (as what happens when you inadvertently Its like a conflict between the on off button and the playback button. I have only had my canon for less than 2 months and paid almost $300!
